DIY: Holiday Projects!

 06 February 2013

In the spirit of catching up, here are a few holiday DIY projects that I have completed over the last couple of months. They are each very simple and inexpensive to complete, which makes them that much more fun!

Let's start with Christmas (I told you I am playing catch up!). I found this pin on Pinterest and immediately knew I had to have my own version with Autumn's little finger prints! The only change that I made was instead of using watercolor paper and stamping ink, I used a 5x7 canvas from Hobby Lobby and acrylic paints. By using the canvas instead of paper, the painting seems to be a bit more durable and I am able to display it on a small easel year after year.

Just as the directions in the pin show, I began by drawing the "string" for the lights. I used a sharpie marker to make the initial line and then traced that with a black glitter paint to add a little shimmer. Once the glitter paint was dry, I corralled Autumn and began making the finger print "lights". While I believe the original was made using thumb prints only, Autumn got tired of only being able to dip her thumb in the paint, so we did finger prints instead!  After all of our lights were placed on the string, I used the various colors of glitter paint again to color in the lights, just to add a little more glitz.

Then I added Autumn's name and the year to the bottom and placed our painting in a small easel for all to see. I will definitely be making one of these with Nate, once he's old enough!

Our second Christmas project was inspired by this pin. Again, I saw this and knew I had to have one with Autumn's little hand! Just as the original post says, this was very simple and I loved the way it turned out! I followed the directions exactly, first painting Autumn's hand with the white paint. Then I placed the ornament into her palm and gently wrapped her fingers around, making sure to gently press each one onto the ornament. Once the paint was dry, I drew in all of the snowman's accessories and added Autumn's name and the year to the back. This makes an adorable ornament to hang from our tree every year!

Sticking with our holiday theme, my next project was made for Valentine's Day. I found this pin and thought I could do something similar to the "Fingerprint String of Lights" we made at Christmas. Again, I bought a 5x7  canvas from Hobby Lobby and red acrylic paint. I painted each of Autumn's hands red with the paint and placed one hand at a time on the canvas, making sure to turn Autumn's thumbs slightly so they would meet and make the heart shape. Finally, I added Autumn's name and year to the bottom. This project was so simple and took only minutes!
