It's A...

 16 July 2012

Last Tuesday I had an appointment with my OB. It was my regular monthly checkup, and being fairly early into this pregnancy, I did not plan on it being too exciting. I did have my fingers crossed for an ultrasound, though.

Earlier in the day, I had mentioned to my friend that I had my appointment later that day. "I wish they could tell you the sex of the baby!" she said. I told her that I did not think I was far enough along for that, and would have to wait another month. "Well, there's no harm in asking." she said.

That thought stuck with me as I laid there watching our baby on the monitor. "Everything looks perfect!" the nurse said. "Strong heartbeat, good moveme -- "Is it too early to tell the sex?!" I blurted out, without thinking twice.

"Not if you really want to know!" the nurse replied. I was dumbstruck. I thought for sure she would tell me that yes, it was too early and I would have to wait until my next appointment. I told her not to tell me because my husband was not with me, but asked if she could write it down for us to open when he got home from work. "I'll tell you what" she said. "If I can get a good enough picture, and I am confident in what I see, I will print the picture out, type out what the baby is on the photo, and seal that up for you."

"Perfect!" I thought. She told me to turn my head while she poked and prodded at my stomach trying to get the baby to cooperate. Not that I would have any idea what I was looking at anyway! Then I heard her say, "OK, I think I've got it." And with that she printed out that precious ultrasound picture, folded it inside a piece of paper, stuck it in an envelope, sealed it up and drew black lines over the tape. She wasn't playing.

"Now he will know you didn't peek" she said, as she handed the envelope to me.

I sent my husband a text message to tell him about the contents of this sealed envelope that was in my possession. Then I sent him a picture of the envelope, because he didn't believe me.

Later that evening we invited over my husband's parents, sister and our two nieces. Along with one of my best friends and her husband and son. On the phone, Steve called my Mom, I called my sister, and my friend called her Mother. With everyone there and on speakerphone, we opened the envelope.
